Packing Tips:

Lamps, Art & Mirrors

Before You Begin:

Use the proper packing materials. It will pay off in the long run! Sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and packing peanuts can all be purchased at Storage Facilities, Home Depot, Staples and other shipping companies in your area. Other great types of reasonably priced padding for your boxes include wadded up newspaper, old pillows and blankets.

The following is a list of tools & materials to make your packing go more smoothly:

-Razor Knife and/or Scissors

-Note Pad

-Permanent Marker

-Boxes of all size (Medium Home Depot Size Box is average)

-Packing Tape

-Bubble Wrap

-Packing Peanuts

Lamps & Lampshades

Never pack a lamp and its shade in the same moving box. A lampshade should be removed from its lamp and packed in a box using plenty of cushioning material on the top, bottom, and sides. Do not pack the box with cushioning material that could potentially damage the lampshade.

Always box lampshades.

Before packing the lamp, remove its harp and light bulb. Pack these parts together using white newsprint. The lamp itself should be wrapped in brown paper pads or bubble wrap. Multiple lamps can be packed together as long as there are cushioned materials around all the items to protect against shifting in the box.

Paintings, Mirrors & Pictures

As a rule, based on the thickness of the frame, two pictures/mirrors can be packed in a "picture/mirror" box. Multiple, smaller pictures/mirrors can be wrapped in a single paper pad or bubble wrap. Each picture/mirror must be insulated from one another. Never put unprotected items into any moving box. When packing pictures/mirrors, keep the glass face-to-face with the backs against the outside of the boxes. A piece of cardboard can be placed between the glass for added protection. Use a box size that fits the pictures/mirrors.

After setting up the picture/mirror box, begin once again with crumpled newspaper on the bottom of the box to act as a cushion. After the item is placed in the packing box, add additional newsprint along the sides to prevent any shifting. Then, Label the packed box with its contents and destination.

Expensive Artwork

If you have artwork valued at more than $300 and it will fit in your personal vehicle and is not boxed, we suggest you take it yourselves for peace of mind. If the item is boxed, we would be happy to take it in our truck and bring it to your destination.

Likewise, if you have artwork unboxed less than $300 and you have room in your vehicle, we suggest you take it for peace of mind. We do wrap everything on the truck, though artwork can be one of those items that even at a lower price value, can have sentimental value to you.

All other Artwork/Mirrors/Pictures

With everything else, with whatever the item is, be sure to have newsprint packed in and around the item in the box. A properly packed box (artwork or not) will have no movement inside.
